Implementing Sustainable Policy in the Fairfax General Plan

Sustainable Fairfax has held brainstorming sessions on sustainability for Fairfax's general plan revision, presented those ideas to the general plan advisory committee and created resource packets to initiate work on the ideas. Our goal is to insure that 'on the ground sustainability' becomes integral to Fairfax's revised general plan.

Fairfax has a tremendous potential and opportunity to write a general plan that can protect and regenerate it’s environment, community and local economy. We would like to encourage the development of a General Plan which the public can easily access. In order to achieve this we feel that the layout should be reader-friendly, use non-technical language and include photographs of what we, as a community, are proud of and would like to see preserved. If Fairfax can achieve this document we will have a guide for the implementation of sustainable community systems, which can also serve as a model for other local governments.

Sustainable Fairfax has been holding open publicized meetings on a regular basis for several months, and we have made it our focus to look at the needs of our natural environment and possible ways of incorporating sustainable systems into our community to meet those needs. We have had input from over 50 members of our community. The information we have gathered is listed under the four elements of Fire, Earth, Water, and Air. This concept is part of our organizational strategy and helps us to insure that we take into consideration every aspect of the environment that needs our attention.
